How to pick the right chain cleaner

The right chain cleaner lifts grime without attacking your chain seals. O-ring, X-ring and Z-ring chains use rubber seals to hold factory grease inside each link, so a safe cleaner is non-corrosive and seal-friendly. Both Motul and Putoline meet that standard.

Option Format Size Seal-safe Best for
Motul C1 Chain Clean Aerosol 150mL O / X / Z-ring Top-ups and tight spaces
Motul C1 Chain Clean Aerosol 400mL O / X / Z-ring Regular full cleans
Putoline + Whites Kit Cleaner + brush Kit O / X / Z-ring Complete clean-and-scrub setup

Cleaning routine that works

A clean chain starts with the right interval. Degrease every 500 to 1000km, or sooner in wet and dusty conditions. Spray the cleaner across all 4 sides of the chain, leave it to dwell for 5 minutes, then work it in with a grunge brush. Wipe back with a rag until the chain reads bare metal. Let it flash off for 10 minutes before re-lubing so the lube bonds rather than floats.

A 400mL aerosol stretches across several full cleans, while a 150mL can suits a single deep clean or a roadside touch-up. Pair a fresh clean with correct chain slack of 25 to 40mm to extend chain and sprocket life by tens of thousands of kilometres.

Finish the job

Clean is only half the work. Re-lube within 15 minutes while the chain is warm and dry for maximum penetration into the 50-plus rollers on a standard 520 chain. A 530 chain runs a wider 3/8 inch pitch, so adjust dwell and coverage to suit.

Frequently asked questions

Is this chain cleaner safe for O-ring and X-ring chains?

Yes. Both the Motul and Putoline cleaners are formulated to be non-corrosive and seal-friendly, so they lift grime from O-ring, X-ring and Z-ring chains without degrading the rubber seals that hold factory grease inside each link.

How often should I clean my motorcycle chain?

Degrease and re-lube every 500 to 1000km as a general rule, and sooner if you ride in wet, muddy or dusty conditions. Letting the cleaner dwell for 5 minutes before brushing gives the best result.

Do I need to re-lube after cleaning?

Yes. Cleaning strips the chain back to bare metal, so re-lube within about 15 minutes while the chain is warm and dry. This lets the lube penetrate the rollers rather than sitting on the surface.
