Ground anchors are the fixed point that turns any chain into a real theft deterrent. Bolt one to concrete or brickwork and your bike is locked to the building, not just to itself. Shark Leathers stocks hardened ground and wall anchors from Oxford and Kovix, plus replacement bolts and caps to keep them serviceable for the long haul.
Ground anchors stop the most common theft method
A chain on its own can be lifted and carried with the bike. A ground anchor removes that option by bolting the lock point to a fixed structure. Oxford and Kovix both use hardened steel bodies and security fasteners that resist drilling and angle grinders. Match anchor strength to your chain so the weakest link is never the anchor itself.
Compare anchor types
| Type | Mounting | Fixings | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ground and wall kit | Floor or vertical wall | 4 bolts | Garages with concrete or brick |
| Flat anchor | Floor, low profile | 4 bolts | Driveways, drive-over clearance |
| Rotating ground anchor | Floor | 4 bolts | Chain feed at any angle |
| Mini anchor | Floor | 2 to 4 bolts | Tight spaces, single bike |
How to fit one properly
Anchor security is decided at install. Fix into solid concrete at least 100mm deep, not screed or pavers, and ideally a slab over 100mm thick. Use all 4 supplied bolts, torque them fully to around 40Nm, and position the anchor so the chain sits 200mm or more off the ground. A chain dropped in the dirt gives a thief leverage against the links. Keep the anchor under the bike where a grinder cannot reach the body, and choose a hardened chain of at least 14mm to 16mm link diameter to match the anchor strength. Replacement RotaForce bolts and protective caps are stocked here so a worn anchor stays usable rather than being binned.
Layer your security like your riding gear
Pair your anchor with a hardened chain and a disc lock for layered protection. Three barriers take longer to beat than one, and time is what stops most thefts. The same defence-in-depth logic applies to rider kit: apparel is rated against EN 17092 with AAA, AA and A abrasion classes, and impact armour is certified CE Level 1 or the higher-energy CE Level 2 at zones rated up to 50mm coverage. For your home garage, a 1.8m chain length gives enough reach to loop a wheel and the frame to the anchor in one pass.
Frequently asked questions
What surface can I bolt a ground anchor to?
Fix into solid concrete or brickwork at least 100mm deep using all four supplied bolts. Avoid screed, pavers or thin slabs, since the anchor is only as strong as what it is fixed into.
Do Oxford and Kovix anchors come with bolts?
Yes, the Oxford and Kovix kits here include the fixing bolts needed to mount them. We also stock replacement RotaForce bolts and protective caps so you can service a worn anchor instead of replacing it.
Should I use a ground anchor with a chain or a disc lock?
Use a ground anchor with a hardened chain so the bike is locked to a fixed point rather than to itself. Add a disc lock as a third barrier for layered security that takes longer to defeat.
