How to choose the right leather care product

Leather care splits into two jobs: conditioning the hide and reproofing the surface. Conditioners feed natural oils back into leather to stop it drying and cracking, while wax reproofers rebuild a water-repellent barrier on the outer layer. Most riders need both, applied every 3 to 6 months depending on use. Care also protects abrasion performance, since EN 17092 rated AAA, AA and A leather relies on supple hide to slide rather than tear.

Product Type Size Best for Reapply
Merlin Wax Reproofing Wax reproofer 200ml Waxed cotton and leather reproofing Every 3 to 6 months
Merlin Wax Reproofing Tin Wax reproofer 50ml Spot reproofing and touch-ups As needed
Motul M3 Perfect Leather Conditioner 250ml Cleaning and feeding smooth leather 2 to 4 times a year

Match the product to the leather. Full-grain and aniline hides used in premium jackets soak up conditioner well and need feeding 2 to 4 times a year. Waxed finishes call for reproofing wax rather than oil-based conditioner. Apply a thin, even coat at around 20 degrees room temperature, work it in with a soft cloth, then leave it 12 to 24 hours to cure before riding. Healthy leather keeps armour pockets aligned so CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 back and shoulder protectors sit correctly in a crash.

Reproofing matters most before wet season. A fresh wax layer restores beading so water rolls off instead of soaking a 1.0 to 1.3mm hide, preventing the salt-staining and stiffening that ruins leather within 2 or 3 years. Looked after properly, a quality leather jacket holds its protective life past 10 years and keeps its EN 17092 abrasion rating intact.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I condition my motorcycle leather?

For most riders, feed leather with a conditioner like Motul M3 Perfect Leather every 3 to 6 months, or 2 to 4 times a year. Ride in heavy rain or strong sun and condition more often to stop the hide drying and cracking.

What is the difference between leather conditioner and wax reproofing?

Conditioner feeds oils back into the hide to keep it supple and prevent cracking. Wax reproofing, like Merlin Wax Reproofing, rebuilds a water-repellent barrier on the outer surface so rain beads and rolls off. Many leather garments benefit from both over their life.

How do I reproof a waxed leather jacket?

Clean the surface first, then apply a thin even coat of Merlin Wax Reproofing with a soft cloth at room temperature around 20 degrees. Work it into seams and high-wear areas, then leave it 12 to 24 hours to cure before riding so the wax sets and restores water beading.
