How to choose motorcycle knee guards

CE certification is the only honest measure of knee protection. Limb armour is tested to EN 1621-1, separate from the EN 17092 standard that rates the abrasion resistance of riding garments. Under EN 1621-1, CE Level 1 armour transmits a maximum mean force of 35 kN with a single peak under 50 kN, while CE Level 2 caps the mean at 20 kN and the single peak under 35 kN. Lower transmitted force keeps more impact in the pad and out of your joint. Armanox runs both Level 1 and Level 2 across Type A and Type B coverage zones.

Spec CE Level 1 CE Level 2
Mean transmitted force Under 35 kN Under 20 kN
Single peak force Under 50 kN Under 35 kN
Typical use Trail and casual Enduro and race
Pad profile Slimmer Thicker

Coverage type matters as much as level. Type A suits a closer slim-line fit for everyday riding, and Type B gives a larger impact zone for harder hits. Macna R.I.S.C. armour ships as CE Level 2 covering knee and elbow in matched sets. Shot Airlight 2.0 and the Airlight kids guard keep ventilated low-bulk shells for hot-weather pace. Fit drives performance: a guard that slides during a crash protects nothing, so size to a snug strap with 0 movement over the kneecap.

Match the guard to your discipline

Off-road riders take more direct hits, so favour CE Level 2 and Type B coverage. Street and commute riders running mesh or textile builds can run CE Level 1 for lower bulk, often under 3 mm of added pad height. Kids guards from Shot and Armanox use the same EN 1621-1 testing, so younger riders size down without dropping certification.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between CE Level 1 and CE Level 2 knee guards?

Both are tested under EN 1621-1. CE Level 1 transmits a mean force under 35 kN, while CE Level 2 caps it under 20 kN. Level 2 absorbs more impact and suits enduro and race, while Level 1 runs slimmer for trail and commute riding.

What does Type A and Type B mean on Armanox knee armour?

Type A is a slimmer, closer fit covering a smaller impact zone for everyday riding. Type B uses a larger coverage area for harder direct hits. Choose Type B if you ride aggressive off-road and want maximum surface protection over the joint.

Do you stock kids knee guards?

Yes. Shot and Armanox both offer kids-sized knee guards tested to the same EN 1621-1 standard as adult versions, so younger riders get certified protection scaled to a proper snug fit.
