Choosing the right Bell helmet

Bell helmet selection comes down to riding style and how much face coverage you want. A full face shell like the Lithium gives the most coverage and the best aerodynamics, an open face like the Custom 500 maximises airflow and visibility, and a modular flips between both. Match a model family to your ride using the comparison below.

Bell Model Style Coverage Shell MIPS
Lithium Full face 100% chin bar Polycarbonate Yes
Bullitt GT Full face retro 100% chin bar Composite Select
Custom 500 Open face 3/4 shell Composite No
Broozer Modular hybrid Removable chin bar Polycarbonate Select

What the protection numbers mean

Fit is the foundation of safety. Helmets sold here meet ECE 22.06, the current European standard that adds rotational and 6.0 m/s oblique impact testing, with many models also carrying DOT FMVSS 218 approval. Sizing runs from roughly 53cm at XS to 65cm at 3XL, measured around the forehead about 25mm above the brow. MIPS adds a low-friction liner that allows 10mm to 15mm of rotational movement to redirect angled impact energy. A correct shell should hold steady with under 5mm of movement when you shake your head, and cheek pads bed in around 15% after the first few rides, so buy snug. Replace any helmet 5 years from first use or immediately after a single impact. Pair your helmet with apparel rated to EN 17092: a AAA garment offers the highest abrasion resistance, AA suits most road riding and A is the entry tier, while impact armour is graded CE Level 1 or the higher-energy CE Level 2.

Frequently asked questions

Which Bell helmets come with MIPS?

Selected Bell models in this range offer MIPS, including versions of the Lithium. MIPS adds a low-friction liner that allows 10mm to 15mm of controlled rotational movement to help redirect energy during an angled impact. Check the individual product page to confirm the MIPS option on the colourway you want.

What is the difference between the Bell Custom 500 and the Lithium?

The Custom 500 is an open face helmet with a 3/4 shell and no chin bar, built for airflow and a classic look. The Lithium is a full face helmet with 100% chin bar coverage and better aerodynamics for higher speeds. Choose open face for cruising and full face for the most protection.

How do I measure for a Bell helmet?

Wrap a soft tape around the widest part of your head, roughly 25mm above your eyebrows, and match the centimetre figure to the size chart. Bell sizing spans about 53cm to 65cm. The fit should be snug with under 5mm of movement, since the cheek pads bed in around 15% after the first few rides.
