How to choose road kevlar pants that actually protect you

The certification on the label determines real-world protection. EN 17092 is the current European standard for motorcycle protective trousers, covering abrasion, burst strength and seam strength across multiple classes; most jeans sit at Class A or AA. Shark's CE Level 2-rated chino achieves CE2 armour pockets from the factory, a meaningful step up from CE Level 1 hip and knee armour in entry-level options.

Single-layer vs multi-layer Kevlar construction

Single-layer Kevlar liners are bonded inside a denim shell. They are lighter but rely on the liner staying in position during a slide. Multi-layer constructions place para-aramid fibre across the full seat and knee zone. Shark's AA-rated jeans use para-aramid panels rated to EN 17092 Class A minimum; the AA rating confirms the outer shell and liner together meet the higher abrasion threshold.

Fit and sizing

Kevlar jeans must sit high enough that knee armour covers the kneecap. Measure your waist and in-seam before ordering. Shark's super-stretch cuts cover a 28 to 42 waist range. Cargo fits add 2 to 4 cm across the thigh. Armour height is adjustable via the internal pocket position.

All-season and rain

Select styles include a removable thermal liner for riding below 10 degrees Celsius and a waterproof membrane rated to at least 5,000 mm hydrostatic head. A 4-season Kevlar pant paired with a road jacket handles most commutes without a separate overpant.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between EN 17092 Class A and Class AA in Kevlar jeans?

Class AA requires the outer shell and Kevlar liner together to withstand a longer abrasion slide time than Class A. Both classes mandate CE-rated hip and knee armour pockets, but AA offers measurably higher protection and is the minimum recommended class for regular road riding.

Do I need CE Level 2 armour in road Kevlar pants, or is CE Level 1 enough?

CE Level 1 armour meets the legal road-riding standard in Australia. CE Level 2 transmits less than half the impact force of Level 1 and is strongly recommended for riders who commute daily or ride at higher speeds where fall energy is greater.

How do I make sure knee armour sits in the right position when wearing Kevlar jeans?

Pull the jeans up to your natural waist before checking armour height. The centre of the knee armour pad should sit directly over your kneecap when seated on the bike. Most Shark Leathers styles include an adjustable armour pocket with multiple height positions to accommodate different leg lengths.
