Choosing the right women's motorcycle helmet

Helmet fit is the single most important safety variable. Women's head shapes typically run narrower front-to-back with a more oval profile. A correctly fitted helmet should sit level on the head, contact the crown evenly, allow no more than two fingers between the chin strap and jaw, and resist rotation under a firm forward push.

Certification and armour standards

Every helmet sold in Australia for road use must carry ECE 22.06, ECE 22.05 or AS/NZS 1698 homologation. ECE 22.06 tests impact attenuation across 11 points versus 5 under ECE 22.05. DOT FMVSS 218 does not meet Australian requirements. Helmets with integrated chin-bar armour should carry CE Level 1 or CE Level 2 impact ratings. CE Level 2 armour absorbs at least 50% more transmitted force than CE Level 1 under EN 17092 testing protocols.

Style and sizing guide

Full face helmets are the recommended choice for speeds above 60 km/h. Modular helmets retain full coverage when closed. Open face helmets leave the face exposed. Visor optical class 1 allows less than 0.12 dioptre distortion. Sizing runs XS (53-54 cm), S (55-56 cm), M (57-58 cm), L (59-60 cm), XL (61-62 cm) and XXL (63-64 cm). Measure 2.5 cm above the eyebrows around the widest occipital point, then cross-reference the brand-specific size chart.

Frequently asked questions

Do women need a different helmet to men?

Not structurally, but head shape matters. Many women have a narrower front-to-back profile. Some brands offer shells specifically shaped for intermediate oval geometry. The priority is fit: a helmet that rocks, gaps at the crown, or compresses unevenly is the wrong size regardless of the gender label.

What certification should a helmet have to be road legal in Australia?

Australian road law requires helmets to carry AS/NZS 1698 or ECE 22.05 or ECE 22.06 certification. ECE 22.06 is the current standard and the most stringent. DOT-only helmets do not meet Australian requirements. Always check the physical label inside the helmet before purchase.

How long does a motorcycle helmet last?

Most manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet every 5 years from date of first use, and immediately after any impact, even a drop from handlebar height. EPS foam compresses on impact and does not fully recover, reducing protection on a second impact. Heat, UV exposure and sweat degrade the liner over time regardless of visible condition.
